For years, the honest answer to "where do you go for an anniversary in Georgetown?" was to get on I-35 South. You could name a good burger on the Square, a solid Italian, a barbecue trailer worth the wait. You could not name a room with a wine cellar, white tablecloths, and a menu built for two hours of sitting still. That room did not exist on this side of the county line.
It exists now, and it is not on the Square. It is on Rivery Boulevard, three-tenths of a mile west of I-35, sharing a parking lot with a Sheraton and a public park. If you have not been paying attention, the Rivery pocket has quietly become the part of Georgetown residents used to drive to Austin for.
The Building the Square Cannot Build
Start with the physical constraint, because it explains everything else.
The Georgetown Square is a preserved 19th-century commercial grid. The buildings are narrow, the ceilings are low by modern-restaurant standards, and the historic district's whole point is that you cannot knock walls out and stitch three storefronts into a single dining room with a private event space and a wine cellar. Haji Moto Ramen at 114 E. 7th Street is exactly the scale the Square can support: a chef-driven room with a short menu and a proper bar, tucked into a footprint the building already had.
What the Square structurally cannot house is the other end of the occasion spectrum. A 5,000-square-foot dining room. A cellar with two thousand bottles. A kitchen line staffed for a 34-ounce Côte de Boeuf. That inventory has to go somewhere with a bigger box, and in Georgetown the only place with a bigger box near the river is the Summit at Rivery Park.
That is the thesis. Rivery is not a food scene. Rivery is where the rooms live that the Square's historic footprints will not accommodate. The neighborhood finally has an answer to the anniversary-dinner question, and the answer is dictated by square footage as much as by chef ambition.
What Sovian Actually Is
Sovian Restaurant & Cocktail Lounge opened April 7, 2026, at 1500 Rivery Blvd., Suite 2175, from Chef Vira Chudasma. Chudasma already runs La Riv Wood Fired Italian a few doors over, which is why locals kept mistaking the buildout for a La Riv expansion. It is not. Sovian is a European-style steakhouse with a wood-fired grill, seven cuts of steak, and Mediterranean seafood, and the room is built to look like it belongs somewhere older than Georgetown.
The price ladder is worth reading carefully because it tells you what the restaurant is trying to be:

The $48 shared strip is the tell. It says "you can come here on a Wednesday without a reason." The $155 Côte de Boeuf is the other tell. It says "you can also come here for the reason." That range is what the Square has been missing, and it is why the CultureMap Austin write-up spent as much time on the $48 line as on the $155 one.
The room seats around a formal dining space with exposed brick arches and crystal chandeliers, plus a lounge, an outdoor patio, and a private event space. Hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 4 to 10 p.m., closing at 9 on Sunday and closed Monday. Reservations run through Resy. The house cocktail is called the Rivery Park Paloma, which is on the nose but earns it, because you can actually walk to Rivery Park from your table.

Read that quote as a real estate signal, not a marketing one. Chudasma already had a proven Italian restaurant in Temple since 2014 and expanded to Georgetown in 2024. The fact that her next move was not a third La Riv location but a bigger, more formal, more expensive room in the same complex tells you what she thinks Rivery can carry. Chefs vote with their capital.
La Riv Is the Weeknight Half of the Same Bet
La Riv Wood Fired Italian sits in the same Summit at Rivery Park development. If Sovian is the anniversary room, La Riv is the Tuesday-with-your-parents room. Both are Chudasma's kitchens, both use wood fire, both take reservations from the same neighborhood.
The reason this matters for a resident: you now have a two-tier answer to "where should we eat?" inside a single parking lot. That is a rotation, not a one-off. Rotation is what turns a corner into a scene.
The 400-Yard Walk That Closes the Argument
The other reason Rivery pulls the way it does has nothing to do with restaurants. It is the geography.
The Summit at Rivery Park sits directly next to Rivery Park, the city park at 1125 Woodlawn Ave. that runs along the San Gabriel River with trails, kayaking access, and open lawn. The Sheraton Austin Georgetown Hotel & Conference Center is in the same cluster. That means a couple can park once, have a cocktail at Sovian's lounge, walk to Rivery Park for twenty minutes of river air between courses, and be back for the entrée. Try that on the Square and you are dodging traffic on Austin Avenue.
Out-of-town guests staying at the Sheraton for a conference or a wedding can eat at Sovian or La Riv on foot. That is a small operational fact with a large downstream effect. It means Rivery is now the default recommendation for anyone who does not want to drive after dinner, and once a corner becomes the default, the openings start to cluster there. That is how the Sovian buildout got prioritized in the first place.
Where This Leaves the Square and Wolf Ranch
The clearest way to understand the Rivery pocket is to draw its boundary against the other two zones a resident already uses.
The Square remains the walkable historic dinner. Haji Moto for ramen, downtown ramen and karaage fried twice in beef tallow, is the newest example of what the Square does well: a chef-driven, short-menu room inside a small footprint. The Square is where you go when the point of the evening is the walk between the restaurant and a bar and the courthouse lawn.
Wolf Ranch is the errand zone. Playa Bowls opened at Wolf Ranch in late June 2025. HomeGoods is there. A Costco is opening minutes away near the Liberty Hill line. Velvet Taco is slated for Bluebonnet Plaza on West University. This is where the weekday rotation for lunch, groceries, and a haircut lives. Nobody proposes marriage at Wolf Ranch.
Rivery is the third zone, and it did not exist as a real zone in the resident's mental map twelve months ago. Now it does, and its job is the occasion.
Do Not Confuse Rivery With Live on the Lawn
One clarification, because residents mix these up. Rivery Park is not where the city's summer concert series runs. Live on the Lawn is a separate monthly music series held at Garey House inside Garey Park, south of town, with the stage on the back porch of Garey House and seating on the event lawn. Pre-registration is required, admission runs five dollars per person with kids under ten free, doors open at 6 p.m., and no entry is permitted after 8:30. The 2026 lineup includes Los Desechos and Deer Fellow, with food trucks like Taconmaye and JC's Kettle Corn and beer and wine from Mimi's Party Palace. Bring a blanket, a friendly leashed dog, and no glass or outside alcohol.
Rivery Park itself is the river-trail park you walk to between courses. Different asset, different weeknight.
A Resident's Occasion Map for the Rivery Pocket
Rather than a list of everything at Rivery, here is the way to actually use it, sorted by the reason you are there:
- Anniversary or milestone birthday. Book Sovian on a Friday or Saturday, request the patio if the weather is under 90, arrive 30 minutes early for a cocktail in the lounge, order the 30-day dry-aged ribeye and the lobster mac with Gruyere and smoked Gouda.
- Out-of-town guests staying at the Sheraton. Walk to La Riv Tuesday or Wednesday when the reservation curve is friendly, then walk the Rivery Park loop along the San Gabriel before drinks back at the hotel.
- A quiet Tuesday when you do not want to cook. The $48 shared New York strip at Sovian was designed for exactly this, and Tuesday is the least-booked night of the week.
- Team dinner or contract-signing. Reserve Sovian's private event space, put the 34-ounce Côte de Boeuf in the middle of the table, and stop apologizing that Georgetown does not have a room for this.
- A first date where you do not want to overcommit. La Riv, a shared pizza, one glass of wine, and the option to keep walking to the river if it is going well.
That is what a Rivery night looks like now. None of these were legible options in early 2025. All of them are legible in mid-2026.
The larger point for anyone who has lived here more than three years: Georgetown's dining map used to be the Square plus the highway. It is now the Square, Wolf Ranch, and Rivery, and the third node did the hardest work, because it added inventory the town literally could not have added anywhere else.
